Introduction
I’m a germaphobe and clean freak, but I don’t want to use harsh chemicals that could damage the surfaces I’m cleaning. That’s why I love this DIY antibacterial spray. It smells great and works just as well as any store-bought cleaner (and even better than some). You can use it on all kinds of things, including countertops, appliances, toilet seats—basically anything that needs a bit of disinfecting!
To make your own antibacterial spray, you’ll need:
To make your own antibacterial spray, you’ll need:
Tea tree oil (10 ml)
Alcohol-free witch hazel (250 ml)
Spray bottle (1 oz) or any other container with a lid that can hold the tea tree oil and witch hazel.
Instructions: Pour the tea tree oil and witch hazel into the bottle. Shake well before using.
½ teaspoon tea tree oil
Tea tree oil is a natural antibiotic, which means it’s antibacterial and kills germs. Tea tree oil can be used on pets and children safely, so don’t worry about using it around them.
To use tea tree oil as an antibacterial spray:
Add the ½ teaspoon of tea tree oil to ¼ cup water in a spray bottle (or 4 cups of purified water). Shake well before each use.
Spray the disinfectant onto surfaces throughout your home every morning or evening when you clean.
1 teaspoon alcohol free witch hazel
Add 1 teaspoon of alcohol-free witch hazel to a spray bottle. Witch hazel is an astringent that helps remove dirt and oil, which can clog pores and cause breakouts. Look for it at most drugstores or health food stores. Do not use traditional Witch Hazel (which does contain alcohol) in this recipe!
Hand towel or paper towel
You can use a paper towel, but you’ll want to save the tea tree oil. If you’re going to use it all, go for a hand towel. Either way, make sure to hang on to your old towels—you’ll need them later.
For this project, I used a hand towel and about an eighth of my bottle of tea tree oil (about 100 drops).
Spray bottle
A spray bottle is a type of container for holding liquids. The most common type of spray bottle is made of plastic, but glass and metal bottles are also available. Spray bottles can be used to apply liquids such as cleaning products or perfumes.
For a more general cleaner, I recommend this DIY All Purpose Cleaner.
To make this spray, you will need:
1 cup of distilled white vinegar
1 cup of water (the ratio of vinegar to water should be about 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water)
10 drops tea tree essential oil (optional)
5 drops lemon essential oil (optional)
